Nestle Presents a Substitute for Workouts – Voice Chronicle

Busy scheduled people who find difficulty in managing time for workout might have an innovative way of reducing their fat in near future. Swiss food and beverage company Nestle is working on the production of an edible product which can stimulate fat metabolizing enzymes in the body. In a landmark discovery, the scientists have examined the compound induced stimulation of these enzymes and are putting efforts to create one for the people who cannot exercise for some reasons. The journal Chemistry and Biology published the study in July.

C13, as the compound has been named, is helpful is regulating the body metabolism by stimulating specific enzymes called AMPK. For the study, mice were subjected to the experiment which showed that the enzyme was capable of stopping fat production from their liver. Kei Sakamoto, head of the diabetes and circadian rhythms department at Nestle stated “the enzyme can help people who can’t tolerate or continue rigorous exercise. Instead of 20 minutes of jogging or 40 minutes of cycling, it may help boost metabolism with moderate exercise like brisk walking. They’d get similar effects with less strain.”

Endocrinologist at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, Dr. Silvana Obici, was hopeful about a drink that might stimulate the metabolism. She stated “as a doctor, I want to point out that any drug that we have at our disposal for weight reduction and obesity (does) not work unless you are implementing lifestyle changes.” Jean-Phillippe Bertschy, analyst at Bank Vontobel AG in Zurich explained “the border between food and pharma will narrow in the coming years.” He added “companies with a diversified, health food portfolio will emerge as the winners.”

However, Sakamoto also remarked that a single product can never completely replace the dynamic role of moderate exercises in the life of humans. There is yet some time required to formulate the consumable product and getting it approved by the U.S Food and Drug Administration.
